British to the core, I love reading books written by authors who are from my home country as it feels somewhat closer to home to dive into. Plus the slang and writing style feels comforting!
I was excited to dive into Boyfriend Material for a few reasons – the cover is amazing, I love fake dating tropes, M/M is something I’m a sucker for and one of my favourite authors Christina Lauren loved this book!
I was pleased with the story and the sweetness of how the setup between Lucian and Oliver goes. Lucian needs to restore his image and so why not fake date the perfect guy. Oliver ensures to get his half of the deal in there with them both agreeing to go to events respectively for one another. It’s a fair deal except that fake dating can always start to feel a little too real.
As they get to know each other more and see beneath the layers of not being so perfect and being too perfect, their layers are shed and they start to see each other in ways that they haven’t before.
The character development especially for Lucian was great to see and in Alexis Hall fashion the book is very descriptive, detailed. Some parts I felt could have done without as I wanted to get in on the action, however we see many secondary characters and it’s an immersive world.
There’s drama family related that pushes the story along, with also personal insecurities and careers that take the front and centre stage.
Overall I enjoyed it and if you’re looking for a super slow burn, with sweet characters easily likable, some family drama and a couple laughs it’s the book for you!

Wanted:
One (fake) boyfriend
Practically perfect in every way
Luc O’Donnell is tangentially–and reluctantly–famous. His rock star parents split when he was young, and the father he’s never met spent the next twenty years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad’s making a comeback, Luc’s back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything.
To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice, normal relationship…and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He’s a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and he’s never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. In other words: perfect boyfriend material. Unfortunately apart from being gay, single, and really, really in need of a date for a big event, Luc and Oliver have nothing in common. So they strike a deal to be publicity-friendly (fake) boyfriends until the dust has settled. Then they can go their separate ways and pretend it never happened.
But the thing about fake-dating is that it can feel a lot like real-dating. And that’s when you get used to someone. Start falling for them. Don’t ever want to let them go.
